FR Au sein du fascinant groupe des Spires That in the Sunset Rise, Ka Baird a commencé par défricher le champ d’une musique weird folk qui fascine encore une décennie plus tard, notamment pour avoir su localiser l’endroit exact où chaos et structure, dissonance et mélodie, théâtralité et violente introversion produisent le sublime.
Vrai vaisseau explorateur, le groupe après avoir traîné sa bosse sur les scènes free jazz du Midwest s’est aujourd’hui métamorphosé en duo cuivré, livrant sax et flûte à un dialogue hypnotique, cette fois-ci à la croisée du jazz libre et de la grande horlogerie minimaliste.
C’est que la prospection instrumentale est aussi au cœur du travail de l’américaine : exploration des cordes avec les Spires du début (qui incluaient l’autoharp, les cithares d’Europe de l’est et le rebab d’Afrique du Nord), des cuivres avec les Spires actuelles, du piano improvisé avec l’album solo See Sun Think Shadow (2015) ; et ces jours-ci, c’est un album centré autour de la flûte traversière, augmenté de voix et de manipulations électroniques de toutes sortes, que Ka Baird vient présenter sur le sol bruxellois. Ce dernier album, intitulé Sapropelic Pycnic et sorti l’année dernière sur le légendaire label chicagoan Drag City, n’a rien d’hermétique ; bien qu’expérimental, il est toujours aussi fermement ancré dans la terre que ses prédécesseurs et parle aux tripes autant qu’il s’offre aux vastes soifs mystiques de l’esprit.
EN With the bewitching Spires That in the Sunset Rise, Ka Baird began by exploring the wilder side of what was at the time termed ‘weird folk’ music, conjuring up something that is still as fascinating now as it was a decade earlier. A true explorer ship, the band succeeded in locating the exact point where chaos and structure, dissonance and melody, theatricality and violent introversion produce the sublime. A dialog between the band’s two core members, the music of the Spires today favors wind instruments such as flute and sax, delivering hypnotic pieces at the crossroads of free jazz, experimental music and spiritual incantations.
Instrumental prospecting is also at the heart of Ka Baird’s work: exploration of the strings with the early Spires, wind instruments with the current Spires, improvised piano with her solo album See Sun Think Shadow (2015). And these days, it is music centered on the flute, adorned with voices and structured around electronic manipulations, that the musician will perform at les Ateliers de la Générale. Her last album, Sapropelic Pycnic, although experimental is nature, is still as firmly anchored to the ground as its predecessors. Released last year on the legendary Chicagoan label Drag City, it speaks to the guts as much as it is eager to quench the vast mystical thirsts of the spirit.
