For her first solo exhibition, Olivia Hernaïz took the liberty to organize a rather confidential show. Here is what you would have read if you had come to see it:
“ladestructiondesespacesvides presents: Olivia Hernaïz, Hzarad, 27, 28 and 29 june 2014.
On June 16, artist Olivia Hernaïz sent ninety original drawings to ninety complete strangers, inviting them to bring the drawings back to her and join in for a three-day exhibition event.
The names of the ninety recipients were randomly picked out of the phone directories of three Brussels municipalities (Saint-Gilles, Forest and Uccle).
The content of the drawings was also left to chance. For each of them, the artist selected two random words in the dictionary : the first indicated the subject to be drawn, the second was used as a caption.
Each returned drawing will be placed randomly on one of the fifteen black squares designed for the exhibition display.
The pieces, which are the size of a postcard, also served as invitation cards. No one other than the ninety recipients have been invited to – or even given information about – the event. No other work from the artist will be shown.
If nobody turns up, not only will this be an exhibition without spectators but it will also be an exhibition without artworks.
